Regular readers of the blog might question my OS agnostic attitude due to the frequent Vista bashing, so here is my list of favorite things about Vista. Promise, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll try to stay all positive; operative word here is \u00e2\u20ac\u0153try.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/font>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><strong><em>It Looks Great<\/em><\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/d2.degen.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/solitare.jpg\" title=\"Solitare\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/d2.degen.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/solitare.jpg\" alt=\"Solitare\" \/><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Face it, if you can make a classic Windows productivity app like Solitaire look this good, it just makes you happy. From the new 3D effects to the simple addition of transparencies, Vista makes for a pleasant visual retouch\u00c2\u00a0of the windows UI. BTW, if anyone has a hack to adjust the transparency level for the contents of a CMD window, please share \u00e2\u20ac\u201c I so miss that capability, visa vie KDE\/Gnome.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in\" class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><strong><em>The new user folder structure<\/em><\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><a href=\"http:\/\/d2.degen.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/users_location.jpg\" title=\"User folders\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/d2.degen.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/users_location.jpg\" alt=\"User folders\" \/><\/a><\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">After years of conditioning us to use the infernal \u00e2\u20ac\u0153C:\\Documents and Settings\\XXXX\u00e2\u20ac\u009d directory structure for storing My Documents and other user configuration, things are now where they should have been all along &#8211; \\Users\\XXXX.<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Not only is the Unix style top level user folder the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153right\u00e2\u20ac\u009d place for this type of data to be located, Vista has added some useful new default sub-folders as well. The new default downloads location is a welcome addition, as is the relocation of IE Favorates.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><strong><em>Un-hideable Fields <\/em><\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">While some will find this a lazy man\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s feature, the ability to see and encrypted fields contents while entering them, I will argue this is a very useful feature. I can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t tell you how many times I have made typos while entering those long 128-bit WEP keys, not once but twice!\u00c2\u00a0<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span><br \/>\n\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><strong><em>Explorer Location\/Browsing Trail Memory<\/em><\/strong><\/font>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">In\u00c2\u00a0a world\u00c2\u00a0where terabyte drives\u00c2\u00a0are\u00c2\u00a0virtually common place, its easy to have dozens, or even hundreds of sub-directories in a folder; the Vista Explorer has taken this fact into consideration. Nothing is more frustrating then moving through a deep folder structure say I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m down in a folder named \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Symantec\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, realizing I need something back in the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153System\u00e2\u20ac\u009d folder, that is at the same level as the Symantec directory, I hit the back button, pleasantly I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m returned to the previous level in the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153S\u00e2\u20ac\u009d vicinity, in fact the Symantec folder is selected so I can even use arrow keys to move down to the System folder I want to open. This is a delightful, yet simple, addition; But I still miss the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153up\u00e2\u20ac\u009d folder icon.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <em><strong>Media Center and Windows Media Player 11<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/d2.degen.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/wmp11.jpg\" title=\"WMP11\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/d2.degen.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/wmp11.jpg\" alt=\"WMP11\" \/><\/a><\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">As I said back in January, shortly after CES 07\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, Vista\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s new incarnation and integration<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>of Media Center Edition (formerly XP MCE), is truly impressive, while I have not quite killed off the TiVo yet, Vista Media Center is looking better all the time. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Powering Vista Media Center is Windows Media Player 11, which is still burdened with too much DRM crap for me give it an endorsement, I have to be honest \u00e2\u20ac\u201c WMP11 performance is surprisingly much better then past versions I have avoided like the plague.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The key point I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m trying to make about Vista is; it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not all bad. While none of the above are compelling enough reasons to upgrade to Vista, they do fall into that \u00e2\u20ac\u0153pleasant addition\u00e2\u20ac\u009d category.
